Four Steps From Hated Job to Career Opportunity
Four Steps From Hated Job to Career Opportunity Weâve all been there. The job offer wasnât all that great but there were bills to pay. So, you took it and now dread heading to work almost every day. Of course, you can keep looking for a better opportunity, but why not maximize the time spent in your paycheck prison? Here are some tips on changing the drudgery to a purposeful payoff. Your Dream Career As the saying goes, you canât move toward your destination if you donât know what it is. Take some quiet time to really gather your thoughts about what your ideal career destination is. Once you have it clearly in mind, imagine what that future you is like. What are some of the talents youâll possess? Who will that future you be? Jot down what vividly stands out. Back to Reality Yes, now back to reality, one step at a time. Those attributes you noted? How did you develop them? Education? Practical experience? Maybe that future you is a great speaker, and gives dynamic presentations to rounds of applause. While you canât do that today, youâve got the beginnings of the map to get there. You know where you want to be. And you know where you are. Let the journey begin! Creating Opportunity Now that you have a destination, even in the worst of conditions you can start your journey. To be that future admired speaker, start by creatively looking for opportunities to move forward. For example, perhaps thereâs a new employee that needs training. Volunteer to do it. Or maybe the training manual needs an update, or doesnât even exist. Create it. In many cases, these will be unpaid exercises, but just remember that youâre doing these as much for you as you are for the place you canât wait to get out of. Be Ready to Stretch Keep your eyes and ears open for what might be called âsuper opportunities.â These are things that need to be done, no one is assigned, and may be well beyond your normal comfort zone. Half of finishing a marathon is making the commitment to start. So, take a deep breath, and step up, knowing itâs just another step towards that future you thatâs waiting to greet you when you arrive. Keep a Record Itâs normal for all of us to forget all the things weâve done that make us proud and give us confidence. So, keep track of your accomplishments, especially the ones that you initiated. Itâs part of YOUR story. Then, at that job interview for the position youâre dying to land, youâll be able to talk about what sets you apart from the rest. In fact, your accomplishments will speak for themselves. Start looking at that 9 to 5 drag youâre in as just a place to begin the work of creating the you that you want to become. By taking the initiative and creating the opportunity, youre opening the path to the future you want, and every step outside your comfort zone is a step towards your goal. The REAL Reason So Many People Hate Networking - Pathfinder Careers
The REAL Reason So Many People Hate Networking - Pathfinder Careers The REAL Reason So Many People Hate Networking Aside from the nervousness that comes from having to talk to complete strangers, most people donât realize the true reason why they loathe networking. Itâs about not the early meeting times for many of these events. Itâs also not about trying to be cheerful or overly perky. And itâs not the pressure of trying to meet valuable contacts. The real reason so many people hate networking is simple: They are afraid that they wonât have anything meaningful to say. You never know who you are going to meet at these events, or what you will talk about. Topics can range from how the local sports team is discussing how the latest technology is impacting your industry sector. We all hate feeling stupid⦠and a lot of times, we can feel that way when we meet someone else who does all the talking⦠while we are thinking to ourselves: âWhat on earth do I say in return?â Believe it or not, no one is an expert at everything, despite appearances to the contrary during networking or business meetings. But the biggest thing you can do to become a savvy conversationalist is to beef up on your arsenal of topics that you have some knowledge about. Here are 5 tips to build your range of conversational topics: 1. Read business journals / publications. General business publications have a wealth of information and data, and can provide you with enough tidbits to be a generalist in pretty much anything if you pay attention to the articles. Its truly amazing to see how many times you can reference an article that you read in a conversation! 2. Keep up on local sports. Itâs tired⦠and itâs clichéd⦠but chances are that someone in that meeting or business networking event is going to be a sports fan. If you can use some opening comment about a local teams performance as an icebreaker, this can help you move on to other topics you feel more knowledgeable or comfortable about later in the conversation. 3. Pore through industry publications. If this an industry networking event, scour industry publications for new ideas, and then use those as openers to solicit the opinion of the person you are talking to⦠you never know what their take might be, and chances are, they likely are more than willing to share their ideas. 4. Ask the other person in the conversation about something. Too many times, in an attempt to try and fit into the conversation (faking it), we go along, perhaps nodding our ahead or grunting in affirmation⦠right up until the part where someone directly asks us what we think⦠and then thereâs that âdeer in the headlightsâ moment when you realize you are going to have to reveal that you really donât know what they are talking about. Instead, transform your lack of knowledge into a question right at the beginning to get the other person talking. Example: âTed- I meant to ask you about that â"can you explain this to me a little more so I can wrap my brain around it?â The person who is doing the talking feels honored that you asked for their expertise. 5. Transform thought leadership into conversations. People like Seth Godin and Guy Kawasaki are just a few of the vaunted thought leaders who tackle a wide range of topics and challenge conventional thinking. If you can âstretchâ your envelope and ask a thought provoking question that can stir a debate, this can quickly engage people around you at a networking event and build the conversation. Everyone has ideas and thoughts which are valuable. But when you let fear overrule your ability to interact with others, your voice is silenced and no one can ever find out what you have to offer⦠or how you can help them. How to Write a Resume For ESL Students
How to Write a Resume For ESL StudentsWriting a resume for ESL students is not all that difficult. The trick to making it all work in the first place is going to be finding a place where you can list all of your accomplishments as well as accomplishments that are related to your particular field. This should then lead to a great resume that is going to help you land the job you want.By going through the application process for the school or institution where you are studying English, you are likely to see a form for writing a resume. Many times, this form will include sections such as about yourself and about your school. These sections should be part of your resume. They are a way for the hiring person to find out a little bit more about you and how well you would fit into their position. The basic format for the English resume is that you are going to list your academic accomplishments in one section and then your job history and skills in another section. All of these sections shou ld be listed consecutively. This will show the hiring person that you have done the best that you can do in every aspect of the English program. It will also help them make a decision if they want to work with you or not.In terms of wording, make sure that it is clear and simple. It is good to be concise but this does not have to be done at the expense of being direct. Many people use a lot of words and can end up losing focus because they are using too many. Your resume will be one of the first things that a hiring person reads. It is important that you do not use long words. If a potential employer is looking at your resume, they are more likely to read your resume all at once if they are able to read from top to bottom. Of course, this is a job that only need to be read once, but it still is best to be as concise as possible. You can always use the back space feature to quickly get to the top of the resume if needed.Once you have a complete resume ready, you need to put together t he contact information of all of your references. You should put a brief summary of them in the contact information section. This allows the hiring person to quickly find you with the information they need. You should put each reference name in the first paragraph of your resume. Be sure to check for proper grammar and spelling. If you find that this is a problem, make sure that you have a college-level English degree. Being able to write a solid resume is one of the most important aspects of getting the job that you want.

Jobs for Men Careers Women Dominate See More Male Workers
Jobs for Men Careers Women Dominate See More Male Workers A new report from the New York Timesâ Upshot section shows that many jobs traditionally dominated by one sex are steadily attracting workers from the other gender. While women are increasingly accounting for a higher percentage of employees in prestigious fields dominated by men such as business, law, and medicine, men are more likely to be working lower-paying gigs that generally draw women, including store clerks, customer service, and textile workers. Race and wealth appear to play roles on both sides of the equation: The men most likely to find work in lower-paying âwomenâsâ jobs are from poor, less educated minority groups, and the women shifting to higher-paying careers tend to be college-educated and white, according to the data. The Times reported that between 2000 and 2014, âthe share of women who work in stores selling products and answering customer questions fell 10 percent; the share for crossing guards and counter clerks each fell 7 percent, and for textile workers it fell 5 percent.â The data comes from a Rutgers University study that has not yet been published. Men appear to be more likely to enter these jobs because of the decline of factory work and other middle-class, male-dominated fields. The study focused on jobs in which one sex accounted for 60% or more of all workers in 2000. Researchers determined that 27 jobs have âmasculinizedâ or âfeminizedâ by 2014, meaning that the percentage of one genderâs workers changed by 4% of more. And itâs the ladies, who have traditionally been underpaid and underrepresented in high-status jobs, who have been on the winning end of these trends. âWomen almost uniformly moved into high-skill jobs, while men were more likely to move into low-skill, low-paying jobs,â the Times reported. Health care, forecast to be the largest job sector in the U.S. by 2020, has seen broad increases in female workers. Women have significantly increased their representation in nearly every health care job between 2000 and 2014, with gains over 10% among dentists, optometrists, and veterinarians. At the same time, men have made only slight in-roads into some well-paid fields that have traditionally been womenâs domain, with 2% increases in male nurses and high school teachers.
